The Funza Lushaka government-funded Bursary Programme promotes teaching as a profession. You can apply for the Funza Lushaka bursary if you are:

  • A South African citizen with a valid ID number.
  • Accepted or already studying at a recognised public university.
  • Committed to teaching in public schools after graduation.
  • Specialising in priority teaching subjects, such as:
    • Mathematics
    • Physical Science
    • Life Sciences
    • Languages (e.g., isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi, Afrikaans, English)
    • Technology
    • Agricultural Sciences
    • Foundation Phase Teaching (Grades R–3)

What Does the Bursary Cover?

The bursary typically includes:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Learning materials
  • A small allowance for living expenses

How to Apply

  • You can apply in two ways: as a first-time applicant and a returning applicant.
  • Complete the online application.
  • Register an account on the e-Gov portal: www.eservices.gov.za
  • Submit all required documents:
    • Certified ID copy
    • Academic results
    • Proof of university acceptance

IMPORTANT:

  • You must teach in a public school for the same number of years you received the bursary.
  • The Department of Basic Education determines placement after graduation.
  • Failure to meet academic or service obligations may result in repayment of the bursary.
