If you completed your schooling outside South Africa, or if you don’t have a traditional South African matric, you’ll likely need an exemption certificate from Universities South Africa (USAf) before you can study towards a degree at a local university.
Here’s a quick guide on what USAf is and how you can receive your certificate.

What Is USAf?
Universities South Africa (USAf) is the body that represents all 26 public universities in South Africa. Through its Matriculation Board, USAf issues exemption certificates to students who did not follow the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) route but still want to pursue higher education in South Africa.
Without this certificate, most universities will not allow you to register for degree studies.
Types of Exemption Certificates
When you apply, you may qualify for:
- COMPLETE EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE: If your qualification meets all requirements for direct entry into degree studies.
- CONDITIONAL EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE: If your qualification is close but not fully equivalent to the South African matric, you may be admitted with certain conditions (e.g., limited subject choices or extra requirements).
Who Needs an Exemption Certificate?
You must apply if:
- You completed IGCSE, O/AS/A Levels, IB, GED, or another international qualification.
- You completed school in another country and want to study in South Africa.
- You have an older South African qualification that does not automatically give you matric exemption.
Getting your USAf exemption certificate is the first step to starting your university journey in South Africa. Without it, even if you are accepted by a university, you cannot formally register for your degree.
So, apply early, prepare your documents properly, and keep track of the processing times to avoid delays.
