The University of the Free State (UFS) School of Nursing offers a highly regarded Advanced University Diploma in Operating Theatre Nursing Science. This one-year postgraduate program equips registered nurses with the specialized skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in the operating theatre.

How to Apply
Applications typically open in February and close at the end of July each year.
There is a non-refundable application fee, so be sure to check the current fee amount on the UFS website.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a registered nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Have a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree or equivalent qualification.
- Have a minimum of 900 hours of practical experience in a general operating theatre complex within the past two years.
- Demonstrate strong academic performance in your previous qualification.
Required Documents
Certified copies of your academic transcripts and qualifications.
- Proof of your SANC registration.
- A certified medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner.
- Proof of your operating theatre experience, such as a case register or employment certificates.
- Two reference letters from professional referees familiar with your work.
Application Forms
Complete the University of the Free State Application Form (Form DV1A) available online or at the Admissions Office.
Complete the School of Nursing Selection Application Form downloadable from the UFS website (https://www.ufs.ac.za/humanities/departments-and-divisions/drama-and-theatre-arts-home).
Selection Process
- Once you’ve submitted your application, the School of Nursing will assess your academic record, operating theatre experience, and references.
- Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview and/or a skills test.
- The final selection is based on a combination of your academic merit, experience, and interview/skills test performance.
