Can I Still Have a Green Bar-Coded ID Book in South Africa?

A green Bar-Coded ID Book is a South African official identification document issued by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). However, note that the Green ID Book has largely been replaced by the Smart ID Card, though some people can still apply for or use the Green ID in specific cases.

Who Can Apply for a Green ID Book?

  • First-time applicants (only in rare cases, as DHA now issues Smart ID Cards).
  • Replacement of a lost, stolen, or damaged ID book (only if you qualify for a Green ID and not a Smart ID).
  • If your fingerprints are difficult to capture digitally (e.g., older citizens).
  • For specific religious reasons (e.g., some religious communities still require a Green ID Book).

How to Apply for a Green ID Book

1. VISIT THE DEPARTMENT OF HOME AFFAIRS (DHA) OFFICE

You must visit your nearest Home Affairs branch. Some branches require an online booking via the eHomeAffairs portal.

2. BRING THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • First-time applicants (16 years or older):
    • Birth certificate (original and copy).
    • Both parents’ ID documents (if available).
    • A completed BI-9 form (available at DHA).
    • Passport-size ID photos (some branches still require them, check in advance).
  • Replacing a lost/stolen/damaged ID Book:
    • A completed BI-9 form.
    • An affidavit from the police station stating the ID book was lost/stolen.
    • Proof of residence (sometimes required).
    • A fee of R140 (subject to change).

3. BIOMETRIC DATA CAPTURE

  • Home Affairs will take your fingerprints.
  • If you are eligible for a Smart ID Card instead, they will inform you.

4. PROCESSING TIME

  • It usually takes 6–8 weeks to receive your ID book.
  • You will receive an SMS when it’s ready for collection.

Most South Africans are now encouraged to apply for a Smart ID Card, which is more secure and widely accepted. Smart IDs can be applied for at selected banks (like Standard Bank, Nedbank, and FNB) and Home Affairs branches.
