The University of Education Winneba (UEW) admission requirement for all the courses at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate level has been released for the 2024/2025 academic session.

UEW Undergraduate Programmes
Full-Time Undergraduate
These are the basic requirements to be satisfied to qualify for admission into the University. They are to be met together with other program-specific requirements.

1. Bachelor’s Degree Programmes
DIRECT APPLICANTS
WASSCE/ SSSCE Certificate Holders
(i) At least six (6) WASSCE Credit Passes (A1-C6), including three (3) Core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies) and three (3) relevant Elective subjects. with a total aggregate of 36 or better. OR
(ii) At least six (6) SSSCE Credit Passes (A-D), including three (3) Core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies) and three (3) relevant Elective subjects, with a total aggregate of 24 or better.
(iii) Applicants must satisfy the Programme Specific Requirement(s) for the Programme(s) chosen. (Please see details in the Admissions Brochure)
School Certificate/GCE holders
GCE ‘A’ Level passes in two (2) relevant subjects (other than General Paper), plus five (5) Credits at GCE ‘O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics.
Applicants with GCE results which are more than five (5) years old should apply as Mature Applicants.
Baccalaureate and other Foreign Qualifications
Applicants will be considered on recommendation and establishment of equivalence by the National Accreditation Board. Otherwise, candidates may apply as Mature Applicants.
MATURE APPLICANTS
i. Must be, at least, 25 years
ii Should have a minimum of GCE/SSSCE/WASSCE Certificate or DBS/RSA Certificate, or an equivalent qualification.
iii. Must pass the UEW Entrance Exam in General Aptitude Test (GAT) and Subject Area Test (SAT)
POST-DIPLOMA APPLICANTS (DIPLOMA HOLDERS)
i. Must possess a Higher National Diploma or its equivalent in a relevant field of study from a recognised institution.
(Successful applicants for Post-Diploma programmes may be placed at Level 200 or 300 of the four year degree programme depending on their background).
2. Diploma Programmes
DIRECT APPLICANTS
i. WASSCE: Passes (A1-D7) in three (3) Core subjects (English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science/Social Studies), plus Credit Passes (A1-C6) in three (3) relevant Elective subjects. OR
ii. SSSCE: Passes (A-D) in three (3) Core subjects (English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science/Social Studies), plus Passes (A-D) in three (3) relevant Elective subjects. OR
iii. SC/GCE: Five (5) Credit Passes at GCE ‘O’ Level, including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject.
Applicants with GCE results which are more than five (5) years old should apply as Mature Applicants.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Sandwich Undergraduate Programmes
These are the basic requirements to be satisfied to qualify for admission into the University. In addition, other program-specific requirements must be met.

- Post Diploma Programmes
Applicant must possess:
- Higher National Diploma or it’s equivalent in a relevant field of study from a recognized Institution. OR
- Diploma in Basic Education or its equivalent.
(Admission to Post-Diploma progranmes would be offered based on the applicant’s qualification/certificate. Successful applicants would be admitted to Level 300)
- Diploma Programmes
(a) Two-Year Diploma Programmes
DIRECT APPLICANTS
i. WASSCE: Passes (A1-D7) in three (3) Core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science/Social Studies, plus Credit Passes (A1-C6) in three (3) relevant Elective subjects. OR

iii. A Distinction or Credit in an accredited Certificate programme. OR

Applicants with GCE results which are more than five (5) years old should apply as Mature Applicants.

MATURE APPLICANTS
i. Must be at least, 25 years by August 1.

iii. Must pass the UEW Entrance Examination.
(b) One-Year Diploma in Education Programme
i. A Bachelor’s degree, Higher National Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Craft Certificate obtained from an accredited Tertiary Institution.
ii. Persons with higher qualifications may apply.
3. Certificate Programmes
i. At least a credit in Core English in SSSCE/WASSCE.
ii. Candidates with higher qualifications may apply.
UEW Postgraduate Programmes
Postgraduate programmes – Regular Session
SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES
PHD PROGRAMMES:
Applicants should possess:
- A researched Master’s Degree in the relevant field of study from an accredited institution.
- A Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above in the courses offered at the master’s degree level
- At least grade ‘B’ in the dissertation presented for the Master’s degree
- Applicants who wish to offer Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Ph.D. in Science Education must hold Research master’s degree in Mathematics Education and Science Education respectively.
M.PHIL ECONOMICS
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or related programme of study at the tertiary level of education from recognized universities.
- Pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education or other Universities recognized by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the National Accreditation Board of Ghana.
- Pass the selection interview.
M.PHIL EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower in Early Childhood Education
- Be computer literate
M.PHIL CHEMISTRY EDUCATION-WINNEBA
Applicants should possess:
A
- A good first degree in Chemistry from the University of Education, Winneba.
- A good first degree in Chemistry (with and education component) from a recognized university.
- A good first degree in Chemistry from a recognized university and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
B. Former UEW products with Diploma in Science Education in addition to BSc in Chemistry from recognized university are eligible to apply.
C. Applicants must pass the selection interview.
M.PHIL. SCIENCE EDUCATION
Applicants should possess:
- A good first degree in the Sciences with an Education component from a recognised University
- A good first degree in the Sciences from a recognised University and a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent
- A good first degree in the Sciences from recognised universities and Diploma in Science Education from UEW.
M.PHIL GEOGRAPHY
Applicants should:
- Possess Second class lower or better in Geography or any related discipline.
- Pass the selection interview.
M. PHIL ART EDUCATION
Applicants should possess:
- A good first degree in relevant discipline ( Studio Art, Art Education, Design, or Art History) from recognized tertiary institution
- A minimum of second class lower.
- A minimum average of “B” in M.A. Art Education programme.
OTHER M. PHIL PROGRAMMES
Applicants should possess:
- A good Bachelor’s Degree with Education component (eg. B.Ed), from the University of Education (UEW) or its equivalent from a recognized University in the relevant field of study, or
- A good Bachelor’s Degree without Education e.g. (B.A, BSc) from an accredited university
- M.Ed or equivalent qualifications with relevant course content. Such applicant may be required to do the M Phil programme within one year.
Applicants with good first degrees from any field of study can apply for Communication and Media Studies programmes.
Applicants for the M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes should submit a proposal defining the specific area of interest, brief description of any previous study conducted on the subject and justification for the study. ( Not more than four pages)
MBA (ACCOUNTING) AND MBA (FINANCE)
Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
- hold a second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in Finance, Accounting, Economics, and other business related subjects. Applications may also be considered from graduates in non-business areas with strong quantitative backgrounds.
- be a professionally qualified accountant and a member of one of the Accountancy bodies constituting the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
- have at least one year’s relevant experience in the private or public sector
- pass a selection interview.
MBA (MARKETING) AND MBA (HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR)
Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
- possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least a 2nd Class Lower Division in any field of study from a recognised institution.
- pass a selection interview
- in exceptional cases, applicants with 3rd Class Division who are already employed in HR-related fields and demonstrate capacity to cope with the programme may be considered for admission. Such applicants must write and pass a selection examination and an interview.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (M. PHIL.) IN TECHNOLOGY
A candidate must meet the following requirements for admission:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Technology, or Technical, or any Engineering/ Building discipline with at least a 2nd class division pass. Applicants without education studies shall be required to take some additional courses in education studies at the undergraduate level.
- Submit a statement of purpose or research interest.
M.PHIL ANIMAL SCIENCE
Entry requirement for admission of students:
For admission to the M Phil programme candidates should possess a B.Sc. or B.Ed. degree in Agriculture with a first or second class.
A B.Sc. degree in a field related to agriculture (e.g. biology, biochemistry and microbiology) may be accepted if this degree is deemed relevant to the student’s chosen area of specialization. Areas of Specialization include:
- Non-Ruminant Nutrition
- Ruminant Nutrition
- Animal Production and Management
- Animal Breeding & Genetics
- Animal Reproductive Physiology
- Meat Science and Technology
Candidates are required to pass an interview before being admitted.
PHD ANIMAL SCIENCE
Entry requirement for admission of students:
Admission to the PhD programmes will require a relevant masters’ degree (M.Phil.) from an accredited University. An M.Sc. degree with research in the relevant field will also be considered for admission. Areas of specialization include:
- Non-Ruminant Nutrition
- Ruminant Nutrition
- Animal Production and Management
- Animal Breeding & Genetics
- Animal Reproductive Physiology
Candidates are required to pass an interview before being admitted.
M. PHIL CROP/SOIL SCIENCE
Entry requirements for admission
For admission to the M Phil programme candidates should possess a B.Sc. or B.Ed. degree in Agriculture with a First Class or Second Class.

Admission to the PhD programmes will require a relevant masters’ degree (MPhil) from an accredited University. An MSc degree with research in the relevant field will also be considered for admission. Areas of specialization include:
- Agronomy/Crop Physiology
- Entomology
- Plant Pathology
- Plant Breeding
- Soil Fertility and Nutrition
- Soil and Water Conservation
Candidates are required to pass an interview before being admitted.
M.PHIL. CHEMISTRY EDUCATION – MAMPONG
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree ( at least 2nd class lower) in Chemistry from a recognized University.
- Pass a selection interview.
MSC IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd class lower) in Environmental Health and Sanitation Education or a related field e.g. Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Public Health etc.
- Pass a selection interview.
MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY (M.TECH.)
A candidate must meet the following requirements for admission:
- A good Bachelor’s Degree in Technology, Technical, Vocational Education or Engineering
- Submit a statement of research interest.
1-YEAR TOP-UP TO M.PHIL PROGRAMMES
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL. IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Educational Administration and Management or related discipline.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. (Educational Administration ) programme.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Special Education from the University of Education, Winneba or related field.
- Professional qualification equivalent to a good bachelor’s degree. The professional qualification must also be in the subject/discipline into which the admission is being sought.
- An academic transcript shall be required for admission.
- Must pass the selection interview.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. Special Education Programme.
1-YEARTOP-UP PROGRAMME FROM M.A. TO M.PHIL IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES
- Applicants must possess:
- M.A. degree in Ghanaian Language Studies or related discipline from the University of Education, Winneba or recognized institution.
b. Applicants with the following qualifications are also eligible to apply:
- M.A. in Linguistics.
- M.A. in Ghanaian Language Studies.
- M.A. in Linguistics with courses in Ghanaian Language.
- Graduate Diploma in Linguistics.
- Applicant(s) must also pass the selection interview.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. Ghanaian Languages Programme.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN FRENCH.
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in French from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in French.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. French Education Programme.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN TESL
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in TESL or English from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in TESL or English.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. TESL Programme.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A. TO M.PHIL IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES.
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Communication and Media Studies (Business Communication/Media Studies/Communication Skills) from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. in Communication and Media Studies (Business Communication/Media Studies/Communication Skills)
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. TESL Programme.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 in M.Tech. Wood Science and Technology programme.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.TECH. TO M.PHIL IN CONSTUCTION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME.
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Master of Technology (M.Tech) Construction from the University of Education, Winneba or any recognized university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 in M.Tech. Construction Technology programme.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEARTOP-UP PROGRAMME FROM M.A. TO M.PHIL IN CONFLICTS, HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEACE STUDIES
- Applicants must possess:
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. (Master of Arts) from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognized Universities.
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Master of Arts from University of Education, Winneba or other recognized Universities.
- Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented with the second year regular M.Phil. (Human Rights) Students
- Applicant(s) must also pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGES STUDIES.
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in any of the Ghanaian Languages Education from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. in Ghanaian Language Studies.
- Applicants with M.A. in Ghanaian Language (which the applicant has chosen to study) with courses in Linguistics can also apply.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

Postgraduate Sandwich programmes
SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR M.A. PROGRAMMES
Applicants should possess:
- A good Bachelor’s Degree with Education component (eg. B.Ed), from the University of Education (UEW) or its equivalent from a recognized University in the relevant field of study, or
- A good Bachelor’s Degree without Education e.g. (B.A, BSc) from an accredited university.
- Applicants with good first degrees from any field of study can apply for M.A. Human Rights, Conflict and Peace Studies and M.A. Communication & Media Studies programmes.
M.A. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND M. ED PROGRAMMES
- A good Bachelor’s Degree with Education component (eg. B.Ed.), from a recognized University in the relevant field of study.
- Applicants with B.A. or BSc. degree without education must also have a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or Diploma in Education
- Applicants interested in the M.Ed. Educational Administration and Management programme must have at least two years working experience in teaching or educational administration after the first degree.
MSC IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
i. A good Bachelor’s Degree (2nd Class Lower Division or better) in Information Technology Education (ITE), Information Technology (IT).
ii. Computer Science and any other Bachelor’s Degree in information Systems (e.g. Management Information System, Business Information System, etc.)
iii. Applicants with 3rd Class Degree in the relevant discipline ( i above) shall have to pass an entrance examination.
iv. A pass in a selection interview to be organized by the Department.
M.ED T.E.S.L.
Applicants with a good Bachelor’s Degree in any subject area and who TEACH ENGLISH are eligible to apply.
M. ED. IN MENTORSHIP
This programme is run in the distance learning mode.
Applicant must:
- Be a teacher mentor trained by UEW in the past
- Hold a first degree with education component
- (eg B. Ed) from a recognized University in the subject specific area and should have taught for at least two years.
- Possess a first degree in a subject specific area plus postgraduate diploma/certificate in education.
- Be a teacher in basic school at the level of principal superintendent and above in the Ghana Education Service status ranking
- Be recommended by his/her head of school.
MSC. ECONOMICS EDUCATION
Applicants must:
- Possess good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Economics, Mathematics, Engineering or related programme of study at the tertiary level of education from recognized universities.
- Pass a selection interview.
M.ED. GEOGRAPHY
Applicants should:
- Possess Second class lower or better in Geography or any related discipline.
- Pass the selection interview.
M. A. ART EDUCATION
Applicants must possess:
- A good first degree in relevant discipline (Studio Art, Art Education, Design or Art History) from a recognized tertiary institution.
M.ED EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education or other Universities recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the National Accreditation Board of Ghana. Applicants must note that, the M. Ed Educational Administration and Management Programme is meant for professionals in the education sector: consequently, applicants must be certified educationist.
- Applicants with teacher’s certificate “A”/Diploma certificate in Education and BA/BSc certificates without education are also eligible to apply.
- Applicants with 3rd class Honours in their respective first degrees must also work for at least three year before they apply for the programme and applicants must pass the selection interview.
M.ED. AGRICULTURE
Entry Requirements:
- candidates should possess a first degree in agriculture or in a related discipline with a minimum of a third class or a pass.
POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (This programme is run in the distance learning mode and on Sandwich Basis)
- Applicant should hold a first Degree from a recognized institution.
- Must have interest in teaching.
- Must pass an interview.
- Applicants without any education background (Qualification in Education) would be required to audit courses in education.
POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TEACHING & LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION (PGDTLHE)
Applicant should be:
- A beginning lecturer in the University of Education, Winneba.
- A Master’s / Doctorate degree holder who wishes to pursue academic career as a teacher in tertiary institutions.
- Lecturers from tertiary institutions who have no formal qualifications in teaching in Higher Education.
M.ED IN TEACHING AND LEARNING (RESEARCH MASTERS)
Applicants must:
- Have a good first degree ( Second Class Lower or better.) Teaching experience is an advantage.
- Have a second degree in a specialized subject, plus a Post Graduate Diploma in Education or Diploma in Education.
- Pass the selection interview.
WEEKEND CLASSES:
EXECUTIVE MASTERS IN HUMAN RIGHT, CONFLICT AND PEACE STUDIES
Applicants must :
- Possess a good first degree in any discipline from a recognized institution

- Be a Member of recognized Professional Institution, like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Harbour, Armed Forces, Health Services and the Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies without first degree but have five or more years working experience.
Postgraduate programmes – Distance Mode
M. ED. IN MENTORSHIP
Applicant must:

- Be a teacher mentor trained by UEW in the past
- Hold a first degree with education component
- (eg B. Ed) from a recognized University in the subject specific area and should have taught for at least two years.
- Possess a first degree in a subject specific area plus postgraduate diploma/certificate in education.
- Be a teacher in basic school at the level of principal superintendent and above in the Ghana Education Service status ranking
- Be recommended by his/her head of school.
POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (This programme is run in the distance learning mode and on Sandwich Basis)
- Applicant should hold a first Degree from a recognized institution.
- Must have interest in teaching.
- Must pass an interview.
- Applicants without any education background (Qualification in Education) would be required to audit courses in education.

No application will be processed unless all requirements are fully met.
- Any change of address must be communicated at once to the Dean, School of Graduate Studies.
- A change of programme after submission of application forms will NOT be allowed.
- ALL certificates and results slip other than those from the West African Examinations Council, the Universities in Ghana and Institutions accredited by the National Accreditation Board should be cleared with the Accreditation Board and the evaluation report attached to the certificate(s).
