How Do I Become a Nurse?

Whether you hope to be a licensed practical or vocational nurse (LPN/LVN), registered nurse (RN), or administrator, the first step to becoming a nurse is getting a solid education.

To become a nurse in South Africa,  you must get a qualification from an accredited institution and then register with the South African Nursing Council, SANC. Moreover, qualified nurses are needed not just for bedside care, but also for leadership roles, education, and advocacy.

Choose a Nursing Path

If you have a passion for a certain type of nursing, consider the type of education you’ll need to get there.

Qualifications that Qualify a Nurse in South Africa

  • Four-year Bachelor Degree in nursing (BCur– Bachelor of Nursing Science, Education & Administration)
  • three-year Diploma
  • One-year Higher Certificate in auxiliary nursing
  • One-year Postgraduate Advanced Diploma in nursing and midwifery on top of your degree or diploma.

Earn a Degree

Here Are the Types of Nursing Degrees Available:

  • Nursing diplomas
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Master of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Doctoral degrees (DNP, ND, PhD, DNSc)

Get Licensed

After you get your qualification, you have to register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

One of the functions of the SANC is to accredit nursing education institutions (NEI’s) and the training programmes presented by those institutions. Nursing Council is empowered in terms of legislation to perform these functions.

Become a Lifelong Learner

You can choose to work in any number of places, but if you want to study further, you can study for a master’s degree or advanced diploma in nursing and you can register as an Advanced Practice Nurse; Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
