2023 Matric Pass Rates for Each Province

As always the Department of Basic Education’s Minister, Angie Motshekga, has once again announced the 2023 Matric Results pass rate, let’s make a comparison between the 2022 matric and the 2023 matric.

The 2022 NSC Examination was rated excellent with an 80.1% Pass Rate. A 3.7% improvement was seen with a 4.1% increase in Bachelor passes.

The country also saw 197 357 diploma passes, 108 159 higher certificate passes and 117 NSC endorsements.

Provincial Matric Pass Rates 2022

The matric pass rates for each province were as follows;

  • Western Cape: 81.4%
  • Gauteng: 84.4%
  • Limpopo: 72.1%
  • Eastern Cape: 77.3%
  • Kwazulu-Natal: 83%
  • North West: 79.8%
  • Northern Cape: 74.2%
  • Mpumalanga: 76.8%
  • Free State: 88.5%

“The pass rate of the 2023 NSC exams in number is the second highest in the history of the NSC exams; when expressed as a percentage, the pass rate of the 2023 NSC exams, is the highest in the history of the NSC so far.” – Umalusi.

  • Western Cape: 81.5%
  • Gauteng: 85.4%
  • Limpopo:79.5%
  • Eastern Cape: 81.4%
  • Kwazulu-Natal:86.4%
  • North West: 81.6%
  • Northern Cape:75.84%
  • Mpumalanga:77.0%
  • Free State: 89.0%

The Class of 2023 can collect their statement of results from their exam centres and schools where they wrote on 19 January 2024.
