What “Higher Certificate Pass” Means in Matric Results

A Higher Certificate Pass in matric results means that a student has passed their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams but only qualifies to study for a Higher Certificate at a college or certain tertiary institutions. It is the lowest pass level of the three categories including; a Higher Certificate, Diploma, and Bachelor’s Pass.

Requirements for a Higher Certificate Pass

  • At least 40% in your Home Language.
  • At least 40% in two other subjects.
  • At least 30% in three other subjects.
  • You must pass 6 out of 7 subjects.

What can you study with a Higher Certificate Pass?

With this result, you can study Higher Certificate courses at TVET colleges or other accredited institutions, and some short courses or bridging programs.
