The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is an agency that ensures the provision of comprehensive social security services against vulnerability and poverty within the constitutional and legislative framework.

Their Social Grants Include;

As of 1st October 2023, SASSA’s old-age pension grants were increased to R2090 for recipients between 60 and 74 years old and R2110 for recipients between over 75 years old (R10 raise). The SASSA Disability Grant was increased to R2090, R10 more. SASSA Child Support Grant went up to R510, a rise of R10.1.

Steps on How To Apply for SASSA Grants

The steps to apply to SASSA Grants are easy for everyone to understand.

STEP 1:

Visit Sassa’s grant website at www.sassa.gov.za

STEP 2:

Scroll down till you arrive at ‘social Grants’ OR simply click directly on the grants that most suit your interest in the list above.

STEP 3

Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for the grant. Gather the necessary documents, which may include proof of identity, proof of residence, and information about your financial situation.

STEP 4: 

If you have met the below-stated application requirement of SA SASSA SRD grants, proceed to the online Application here – www.srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/application/auth.

  • When you open the link above, a space will be provided for you to type in and send your mobile number, where a one-time PIN (OTP) will be sent to you.
  • Enter the OTP
  • Confirm and accept the Clauses in the Declaration and Consent documents
  • Enter your details
  • Provide your cell phone number, employment information and lifestyle sustainability information
  • Provide your banking details
  • Follow the prompts to complete your application
  • Double-check all information before submitting to avoid errors.

STEP 5:

Click srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/reconsideration to go to the application status portal, then enter your South African ID number and the phone number used to submit your application.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • The applicant and child must be resident in South Africa.
  • The child must be under the age of 18 years.
  • The applicant must submit a medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability.
  • The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test (except for foster parents.
  • The care-dependent child/children must not be permanently cared for in a State Institution.

  • The applicant and child must be resident in South Africa.
  • The child must be under the age of 18 years.

SASSA Disability Grant Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • The applicant must be a resident of South Africa.
  • The applicant must be 18 to 59 years of age.
  • The applicant must submit a medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability.
  • The applicant’s medical assessment must not be older than 3 months at the date of application.
  • The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
  • The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.

SASSA Foster Child Grant Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The foster parent must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • Both the applicant and the child must reside in South Africa.
  • The child must remain in the care of the foster parent(s).

SASSA Grant-In-Aid Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must receive a grant for Older Persons.
  • Disability grant or a War Veteran’s grant, and require full-time attendance by another person.
  • Owing to his/her physical or mental disabilities.
  • Must not be cared for in an institution that receives a subsidy from the State for the care/housing of such beneficiary.

SASSA Older Persons Grant Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • The applicant and child must be resident in South Africa.
  • Must not be less than 60 years old.
  • The applicant must not receive another social grant for him or herself.
  • The applicant and spouse must comply with the means test.
  • The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
  • The applicant must submit a 13-digit bar-coded identity document.

SASSA Social Relief of Distress Application Requirements

Social relief of distress is a temporary provision of assistance intended for persons in such dire material need that they are unable to meet their or their families’ most basic needs.

It is issued monthly for a maximum period of 3 months. An extension of a further 3 months may be granted in exceptional cases.

SRD is paid to South African citizens or permanent residents, who have insufficient means and meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • The applicant is awaiting payment of an approved social grant.
  • The applicant has been found medically unfit to undertake remunerative work for less than 6 months.
  • The breadwinner is deceased and application is made within three months of the date of death.
  • No maintenance is received from the parent, child or spouse obliged in law to pay maintenance, and proof is furnished that efforts made to obtain maintenance have been unsuccessful.
  • The breadwinner of that person`s family has been admitted to an institution funded by the state (prison, psychiatric hospital, state home for older persons, treatment centre for substance abuse or child and youth care centre).
  • The applicant has been affected by a disaster as defined in the Disaster Management Act or the Fund Raising Act, of 1978.
  • The person is not receiving assistance from any other organization.
  • Refusal of the application for social relief of distress will cause undue hardships.

SASSA War Veterans Grant Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen / permanent resident.
  • The applicant must be a resident of South Africa.
  • The applicant must be 60 years and over or must be disabled.
  • The applicant must have fought in the Second World War or the Korean War.
  • The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
  • The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
  • The applicant must not receive another social grant in respect of his or herself.
