Western Cape Admissions for Grade R and School Transfers 2025

Here’s what you need to know about Western Cape admissions for Grade R and school transfers (Grades 2-7 and 9-12) for the 2025 academic year:

  • Grade R Admissions is for children turning five years old by June 30th of the year they are applying.
  • Grades 2-7 and 9-12 School Transfers means that you can only apply to transfer your child to a new school if you are moving to a new home within the school district. Only relocation requests will be considered.

The application period for Grade R Admissions and Grades 2-7 and 9-12 School Transfers for 2025 will be from August 1 to August 16, 2024.

How to Apply for Grades 2-7 and 9-12 School Transfers

To apply, you will need to complete a Transfer Request Application Form and submit it with supporting documents to the school of your choice or district office.


The application process is handled online through the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) website https://wcedonline.westerncape.gov.za/admissions.

  1. Gather all required documents beforehand which include:
    • Last school report card (for learners who have been to school)
    • ID, birth certificate, passport, study permit or proof of application or police affidavit
    • Proof of Residence
  2. Decide on your preferred schools and have a ranked list ready for the online application.
  3. Don’t wait until the last minute to submit your application.

The forms will be available online and at schools starting in August.

The WCED also offers help with applications at schools, malls, libraries, and district offices during the application windows.
