    Good day

My son is in grade 12 this year and want to study next year at UCT. He want to do study in the field of ocean geography. Can you advice me what he must do and the requirements and everything that he need to apply for the course. how long is the duration and the fees and can he also apply for accommodation and what is the cost.
Can you also advice me when is the best time to apply after his June results.

    • Hi there, We are happy to help guide you and your son through the UCT application process for ocean geography! Here’s some information to get you started:

      Courses at UCT:

Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Geographical Science (EGS) with a major in Oceanography: This is the most direct option for ocean geography. The program lasts 3 years and focuses on physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, marine geology, and coastal processes.

Bachelor of Science Honours in Oceanography: This is a 4-year program with a stronger emphasis on research and preparing students for postgraduate studies.

Other options: Consider related programs like Marine Science or Environmental Science, which may still involve significant oceanography coursework.

      Requirements and application process:

Matric requirements: Your son needs to achieve a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with good passes (preferably distinctions) in Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, and English.

Application deadlines: The best time to apply is as soon as possible after the June results, ideally by early August. Applications for the following year usually open in May.

Application process: Apply online through the UCT website. He’ll need to submit his academic record, a motivational letter explaining his interest in ocean geography, and references.

      Fees and accommodation:

Fees: Undergraduate tuition fees at UCT vary depending on the program and student status. For international students, the EGS program costs around R55,000 per year, while the Honours program is around R65,000.

Accommodation: UCT offers on-campus and off-campus housing options. On-campus residence fees vary depending on the type of room and meal plan.

You can find estimated costs and application information on the UCT website: https://uct.ac.za/students/student-life/student-housing
