What “Diploma Pass” Means in Matric Results

A Diploma Pass in matric results means that a student has met the requirements to study towards a diploma at a university of technology or other tertiary institution. It is one level below a Bachelor’s Pass but above a Higher Certificate Pass.

Requirements for a Diploma Pass

  1. Minimum Subject Passes: Pass six out of seven subjects.
  2. Language Requirements:
    • At least 40% in your Home Language.
    • At least 30% in the Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) (if different from your Home Language).
  3. Other Subjects:
    • At least 40% in three other subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
    • At least 30% in two other subjects.
  4. Life Orientation: While you must pass it, the score doesn’t count towards the requirements for a Diploma Pass.

What Can You Study with A Diploma Pass?

With a Diploma Pass, you can enrol in diploma courses at institutions like universities of technology, TVET colleges, and some private colleges. It doesn’t qualify you for a bachelor’s degree at a university unless you upgrade your results.
